World Poetry Day 2023

World Poetry Day 2023

Get Involved

It’s that time of year where we celebrate poetry all over the world. World Poetry Day allows people of all backgrounds and cultures to express themselves. So, how can you get involved?

  • Write a poem, duh! Poems can greatly alleviate stress, bring comfort, and help us better understand the world around us. Here are some poetry exercices to get started.
    • Read some poetry. My personal favorite is “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost.
    • Visit the American Poetry Museum. Located in Washington, D.C, this building was founded in 2004 and offers exhibits to learn about the art form and various famous poets. It also hosts events and workshops.
    • Poetry slam. What’s a more fun way to celebrate Poetry Day than to gather your friends for a fun night of competition? You can do it right in your living room!

To celebrate further, here are 5 famous quotes to help you get through the day:

1. Salman Rushdie

“A poet’s work is to name the unnameable, to point at frauds, to take sides, start arguments, shape the world, and stop it from going to sleep.”

2. Khalil Gibran

“Poetry is a deal of joy and pain and wonder, with a dash of the dictionary.”

3. Charles Baudelaire

“Always be a poet, even in prose.”

4. Friedrich Nietzsche

“Poets are shameless with their experiences: they exploit them.”

5. William Wordsworth

“Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity.”
